How Deep is a Fathom
As mentioned above it is mainly used as a nautical unit of depth. So now the question is how deep is a fathom.
Fathom has been standardised to 6 Feet in distance. If we convert Fathom to Feet we need to convert feet into meter.
1 Fathom = 1.83 m
How Long is a Fathom ?
1 fathom = 1.829 meters or 6 feet
To calculate simply multiply the length value by 1.829 meters.
Or to get value on feet, simply multiply by 6 feet.
How Deep is 125 Fathom ?
As we know that 1 fathom equal to 6 feet.
So, 125 fathoms equal to 125 × 6 = 750 feet deep
125 Fathoms = 750 Feet
Why is a Fathom 6 feet ?
The fathom is based on the length of the arms spread apart of an average man from one hand to another hand. And it was found that the average span of arms of the sailors was nearly around 6 Feet. Hence it is called as Fathom.
How Depth of Water is Measured Using Fathom
In order to measure the depth of the water a weight also known as Lead Bob is dropped into the sea with a line (rope) attached to it, till it hits the seabed. The weight or the Lead Bob is dropped deep into the sea till he gets a slack.
After getting a slack, he stops the further dropping of the weight and will start pulling the line. He will now read the line on the mark to find the depth of the sea at that place. And if there is no measurement on the line the length of each pull of the line can be counted to find the depth.
how fathom is used
Fathom is primarily used as a unit of measurement for depth in water. It is often used in nautical contexts, such as for measuring the depth of a body of water or the distance between two points underwater.
For example, a sailor might say “The depth of the water here is about 10 fathoms,” meaning the water is about 60 feet deep. Similarly, a diver might say “I descended to a depth of 20 fathoms,” meaning they went 120 feet underwater.
