As we know that fuel oil used for combustion big diesel engine used contains some amount of sulphur.This sulphur in cylinder reacts with water while burning and form H2SO4.This H2SO4 causes Cold Corrosion,which can cause wearing of liner.
To counteract Cold corrosion in the combustion chamber ,oil of high TBN is generally used.
But, When We use Fuel Oil containing low sulphur content then we must need to change the cylinder lube oil having low TBN.
It is because,if we use high TBN value Cylinder lube oil with low sulphur fuel oil , cause only some part of alkaline compound present in the lube oil be used to react and neutralize the acid formed in the cylinder while the remaining one will cause Lacquering.
