What is turbocharger overspeeding ?
Overspeeding for turbocharger is a term used when a turbocharger runs well beyond its normal operating limits. If the compressor or turbocharger and the engine have any leaks, cracks or bad seals, the turbocharger will have to work much harder than it should to provide the necessary air volumes to the engine.
Causes of turbocharger overspeeding
1.Modifications of the engine, like’ chipping’ or’ over – fuelling’
2.Inconsistent air flow into the turbocharger
– tear in the air tube or the tube being fully detached.
– restrictions on air intake filter or pipe working.
– air leakage between the compressor and the engine.
4.Installing an incorrect turbocharger.
6.Incorrect movement of the VNT mechanism or restrictions
7.Wastegate or VNT function has been improperly configured
8.Loss of signal for the wastegate or VNT control to the SREA (Simple Rotary Electronic Actuator).
Signs of overspeeding
1.The’ orange peel’ effect
2.Inducer blade damage can result from housing rub
3.Staining due to oxidation
4.Partial blade loss
6.Fatigue blade fractures
Preventing turbo failure caused by overspeeding
1.Check there are no restrictions or leaks in the air intake pipe work
2.Ensure the wastegate or VNT linkage is operating freely and is properly calibrated
3.Check the electronic sensors and ECU are operating correctly
4.Avoid remaps chipping or over-fuelling
